Hip Hop Revolution, a full day dedicated to celebrate hip hop culture, is set to take place at The Public, West Bromwich, on Saturday 25th June.

The venue will host workshops in dance, graffiti, DJing, MCing and t-shirt design as well as a screening of the breaking film Wildstyle and features special performances from local hip hop talent culminating with a mass dance led by Turbo which will be open to all participants.

Ahead of Hip Hop Revolution, Kashmir Leese from iDance UK Hip Hop Championships 2010 winning crew Smash Bro’z is developing the central dance performance with schools in West Bromwich and Walsall and local dance crews. Local urban music company Stayfresh will also be showcasing their singers and MCs straight after Turbo’s performance

In the evening Throwdown, the monthly dance battle event that takes place at Plan B, Brixton, will be hosting street dance battles too, where performers will be wearing specially created t-shirts designed by streetwear brand SoapBox, whose work will also be displayed at the event.

Hip Hop Revolution is part of Dancing for the Games, inspired by London 2012 and part of the Cultural Olympiad in the West Midlands.  The day-long event has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands. Hip Hop Revolution will launch Dance Routes, a year-long series of cutting edge underground dance events produced by Punch.

Naomi Temple, programme manager for Dancing for the Games said: “Hip Hop Revolution is set to be an exciting celebration of hip hop culture. It’s fantastic that local people are having the opportunity to work with and perform alongside professional artists and through Dancing for the Games connect with London 2012 in their own community.”

To celebrate the Cultural Olympiad Punch will be running five events over the next year with each representing the one of the five Olympic rings.

Ammo Talwar, founder and chief executive of Punch, says: “This event is a must for those people interested in dance, music and urban culture. The day is set to be packed full of entertainment and energy and will be a great opportunity for people to come along to mix with, and even dance with, some of the biggest names on the UK hip hop scene.”

Hip Hop Revolution‘s day long party is situated close to BASS Festival 2011 (British Arts and Street Sounds), the UK’s only month-long celebration of black music and art.
