Street Dance 2 earned a gross total of £608,024 at the cinema box office over its opening weekend. The box office results for Street Dance 2 3D were published earlier last week revealing that the sequel only achieved a quarter of the success of the first film.

Street Dance 2, produced by Vertigo Films, opened in cinemas on Friday 30 March against new releases Wrath of the Titans, The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Into the Abyss which all made entries into the top 10. The Hunger Games, released the weekend before, maintained its place at the top of the charts.

In 2010 Street Dance 3D earned £2.4 million over it’s opening weekend and was the top grossing film that week. By comparison Street Dance 3D was shown at 412 cinemas screens across the UK and Street Dance 2 at 390. However, the published results only include domestic cinema sales and don’t account for international earnings.

Street Dance 2 stars Falk Hentschel and Sofia Boutella with George Sampson and Flawless returning as The Surge. While the first movie cast small time actors in lead roles with British dancers as supporting cast, the sequel’s supporting cast includes international dance superstars including B-Boy Lilou and Stephanie Nguyen (Lil Steph), both dancers for Madonna, and world popping champions Kite and Dey Dey.

Producer James Richardson, directors Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini and writer Jane English also returned to make the Street Dance sequel. While the results for the UK market may be disappointing it is speculated the international cast of dancers may appeal to a broader audience when the movie is released overseas. International sales will be handled by Protagonist Films.
